Emilia Romagna Grand Prix: Qualifying Update

Are we about to see McLaren take another commanding lead this Saturday, or might their competitors surprise us during the qualifying rounds of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix?

In preparation, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris from McLaren have consistently topped the charts throughout all three practice sessions. Piastri has set the pace in both FP1 and FP2, while Norris finished fastest in FP3, with Piastri close behind in second place.

A key focus for today’s qualifying is the introduction of the Soft C6 tire compound at Imola for the first time this season. Drivers switched from medium tires to soft ones during the latter part of FP3, but lap times didn’t show significant improvement. One possible explanation for this could be that the soft tires overheated by the end of the laps, which diminished grip in the last corners of the track.

This situation might alter how teams manage their warm-up laps during qualifying, possibly leading to increased congestion during the initial quarter.

It’s shaping up to be a potentially hectic qualifying session, and we’ll be covering it live from the start of Q1 onward.

Note: All times are in Eastern Time.

Q1 Qualification Notes

10:00: The green light is on at Imola, and Q1 has officially begun. There’s an 18-minute countdown, and as mentioned earlier, traffic will likely play a significant role.

Prequalified Notes

9:55: McLaren CEO Zak Brown anticipates that Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Max Verstappen will comprise the top three in qualifying. Take it with a grain of salt.

9:47: In a pre-qualifying F1TV broadcast, Flavio Briatore discussed the decision to replace Lawrence Barrett and Jack Douhan with Franco Colapinto. He downplayed the notion that Colapinto has five races to prove his worth with Alpine, remarking that his future depends on “performance.”
