Derek Kerr’s shoulder injury turned out to be more severe than initially thought.
The Saints quarterback has announced his retirement at 34, following a diagnosis that includes a lacerated lip and significant changes to his rotator cuff, as confirmed by the team on Saturday.
He had been worried about potentially missing the 2025 season, but after a conversation with his wife, Heather, he decided to call it quits after 11 seasons.
Kerr, who made a name for himself at Fresno, played for both the Raiders and the Saints throughout his career.
“After reflecting, praying, and discussing with Heather, I have made the decision to retire from the National Football League,” Kerr expressed in a statement. “Over the past 11 years, we have felt incredibly blessed and grateful. Finding the right words to thank all our teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials, and especially the fans who made this journey memorable is not easy.”
