Queen Margrethe's shocking abdication announcement has many royal watchers wondering if something is rotten in Denmark.
On New Year's Eve, the 83-year-old announced plans to step down after 52 years and hand over the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederick.
The decision came months after the Spanish socialite denied rumors that the future king's 55-year-old wife had an affair while he was traveling abroad.

Casanova told the newspaper: “I categorically deny any statements that suggest a romantic relationship between Prince Frederick and me.'' “These types of statements are not only completely false, they maliciously distort the facts.”
“This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take appropriate steps to protect my honor, truth, and privacy rights,” she added.
Danish news site Dagens.com noted that Mr. Frederic's visit to Madrid took place while his wife was visiting New York for United Nations Day.

The newspaper said Casanova was born in Mexico but is based in Spain. From 2005 to 2007, she was married to equestrian Cayetano Martinez, the current Count of Salvatierra and Duke of Arjona.
Frederick and Princess Mary celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary in May. The two met in Australia in 2000, when the prince was visiting for the Sydney Summer Olympics. Former advertising executive Mary Donaldson fell in love with Fred at a local bar, unaware she was talking to the heir to the thousand-year-old Danish throne, People magazine says. reported.
The two dated long-distance before getting engaged in 2004, and announced they were getting married that year. They are the parents of four children.

In March 2023, the Queen's second son Prince Joachim announced his move to Washington, DC. Prince Joachim, 54, has taken up a new position at the Danish embassy, which is part of the Ministry of Defence. He previously lived in France.
The announcement was significant as the Queen had previously revealed that she would strip Joachim's four children of their titles of prince and princess. In early 2023, they became known as His Excellency the Count of Montpezat instead of His Royal Highness.
Joachim told Danish outlet BT that he had not spoken to his mother, brother and sister-in-law after the shocking news. He also claimed that “unfortunately” there had been no connection between them and the monarchy since the announcement of the title change.

Joachim is sixth in line to the Danish throne. His children will hold the current 7th to 10th place in the line of succession.
