Police were not able to locate the raccoon following the incident.
A man was reportedly bitten by a raccoon in a Market Basket parking lot in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Tuesday, according to officials.
Portsmouth Police received a call from a third party about an attack involving a young man and a raccoon near the grocery store, said Sergeant Jordan Wells.
When the officers arrived, neither the raccoon nor the alleged victim was at the scene. However, about an hour later, they received a call from the man, who was getting medical treatment. He is currently in stable condition, authorities reported.
After the incident, police could not find the raccoon, as stated by officials.
Wells mentioned that there’s “no definitive information” to suggest that the raccoon had rabies.
The presence of raccoons during the daytime isn’t unusual in spring, according to Wells. Just earlier that week, police were alerted to a potentially rabid raccoon spotted near a local Hannaford’s.
“This time of year, you might see female raccoons out during daytime looking for food. They can be very aggressive,” he noted.
