Senate Republicans Await Guidance on SAVE America Act
Rachel Bovard, deputy director of programs at the Conservative Partnership Institute, remarked that Senate Republicans are looking for direction in the ongoing effort to pass the SAVE America Act. Despite being in the majority, they’re finding it difficult to advance the bill.
During an appearance on Breitbart News Saturday with guest host Bradley Jay, Bovard highlighted the challenges facing the Save America Act. The proposed legislation includes significant reforms like requiring proof of citizenship and voter ID for voting.
While the House of Representatives has already approved the bill, the Senate’s requirement for 60 votes complicates its passage. To overcome this hurdle, Bovard and Senator Mike Lee from Utah have suggested utilizing a talking filibuster to lower the threshold to just 51 votes.
Interestingly, former President Donald Trump has called for completely eliminating the 60-vote rule.
Bovard expressed uncertainty about whether the SAVE America Act can garner enough support to make it through the Senate. This week, as the Senate deliberates on amendments to the budget resolution, Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana introduced an amendment that incorporates several key elements of the SAVE America Act.
However, not all Senate Republicans are on board; four members—Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, Thom Tillis from North Carolina, Susan Collins from Maine, and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska—voted against the amendment, leading to a tight outcome of 48-50.
Bovard pointed out that McConnell has been at the helm of Senate Republicans for nearly two decades, which may explain why many senators are unaccustomed to navigating contentious debates. She noted that the Senate’s tendency to work only about two-and-a-half days a week contributes to this challenge.
Jay remarked that Senate leadership involves being proactive, stating that Republican leaders need to push to advance the president’s agenda.
Bovard observed that many within the Senate seem to be waiting for someone to take the lead. “This bill has majority sponsorship. They’re simply looking for direction,” she explained, adding that many senators have not experienced a leader who is responsive to their needs. She also emphasized that a strong push could lead to a popular political outcome, contrasting current leadership with McConnell’s approach.
“The Senate should be a place for discussion and for passing negotiated agreements,” she said, reiterating the call for a fair chance for the SAVE America Act. “That’s all we’ve ever asked for—just give it a try.”
