Rachel Maddow Describes Anti-ICE Protesters as Peaceful Even Though Videos Show Confrontations with Police

Maddow Discusses Chicago Protests Against ICE

On Thursday, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow characterized the anti-ICE protests occurring in Chicago as instances of “peaceful, loud direct action” while discussing a documentary about former Democratic Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young.

Pushback against ICE’s actions targeting undocumented immigrants has grown, leading to several protests at an ICE facility in Chicago. Some protesters have called for the arrest of ICE agents, or even violence against them. Maddow highlighted these efforts during her appearance on “The Katie Toole Report.”

“I’ve been focusing on the actions of the Trump administration this season, particularly the protests—not just the large ones, but also how regular Americans are reacting to these situations everywhere,” Maddow shared with host Katie Toole. “What’s particularly interesting in this second Trump term is the immediate, grassroots protests seen in Chicago, where individuals are acutely aware of ICE’s actions.”

“They respond quickly,” Maddow added. “People are mobilizing with their neighbors, and this is happening throughout the Chicago area. Good journalism is just starting to notice this, but… it’s more spontaneous and emotional rather than organized, which means those on the ground are crucial for coverage. This reflects a broader American tendency to resist certain tactics. It influences our perception of ICE and shapes our instinct to respond in a peaceful, vocal, and direct manner.”

On Saturday, clashes erupted between ICE agents and protesters near an ICE facility in Chicago. Videos captured scenes where officers were ambushed, leading them to deploy tear gas while attempting to detain undocumented immigrants. Reports indicate that assaults on ICE agents have skyrocketed by 1000% year-over-year, according to an August release from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

During one operation in Chicago, multiple attackers reportedly used up to ten vehicles to assault ICE vehicles. The Chicago police allegedly ceased support for ICE during this conflict. A September 26 post from DHS attributed the violent incidents at an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, to the inflammatory rhetoric of Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

“The ongoing demonization of ICE by @GovPritzker and @Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has incited a chaotic riot at the Broadview facility,” DHS stated. “Since September 19, violent mobs have repeatedly targeted this location.” Law enforcement has arrested 17 individuals involved in these incidents on charges related to obstruction and assault against federal officers.

Violence against ICE facilities has been noted across the country, with incidents reported in Portland, Oregon, where demonstrators attacked journalists covering the protests and allegedly planned targeted actions against federal aircraft.

In a separate incident on September 24, a shooting at an ICE office in Dallas resulted in two fatalities, with the shooter taking his own life. In Texas, ten individuals faced attempted murder charges connected to a violent event that occurred on July 4 in Alvarado.
