Rachel Sennott’s New Show, I Love LA, Explores Birthday Chaos
Have you ever had your well-thought-out plans disrupted by a friend who just can’t seem to pull it together? Rachel Sennott, the star and creator of I Love LA, certainly gets it.
In the debut episode of her new HBO Max series, Sennott’s character, Maia, is having a birthday dinner in Beverly Hills. Everything seems perfect until her friend Talulah, played by Odessa Azion, arrives from New York, bringing along a whirlwind of disarray.

Trying to keep her celebration simple, Maia quickly becomes frustrated with Talulah, who insists on making last-minute adjustments to the dinner, changing both the timing and the number of guests. As a result, Maia spends a considerable amount of time on the phone with the restaurant, trying to patch everything up. When she finally arrives at the venue with Dylan (Josh Hutcherson), the two are led to a private suite that Talulah managed to secure through her influencer connections. To top it off, others in the group decided to bail on the dinner for something they deemed better.
If you felt a bit of irritation at the rudeness of it all (even if Talulah meant well), you’re not alone. In a conversation with DECIDER, Sennott revealed that the chaotic scenarios presented in the pilot were inspired by her own experiences with a group of extremely easygoing friends.
“When I plan something, I often get responses like, ‘I’ll be 20 minutes late,’ or ‘I don’t think I like that restaurant,'” Sennott quipped. “I end up feeling flustered, thinking, ‘Guys, I had the perfect plan!’ I even considered everyone’s dietary restrictions. So, yes, there’s definitely a personal touch here.”
At just 30, Sennott has built quite a career with projects like Bodies Bodies Bodies, Saturday Night, and Shiva Baby. It’s understandable why she prefers to be the one with the plan. Though she mentions that as she reaches the end of her “Saturn Return,” a time of personal reassessment, she’s learning to adopt a more laid-back approach.
“I’ve always been the planner,” she said. “But as I’m finishing up my Saturn Return, it feels like I’m learning to trust my intuition and to be more spontaneous.”
So what’s the outcome of her Saturn Return adventures? Azion also weighed in about her role in the show, suggesting that Sennott navigated this period exceptionally well. “It seems she did fantastically during her Saturn Return since she created the entire series,” she noted with a laugh. “In the end, everything turned out for the best.”
The first episode of I Love LA is currently available on HBO Max, with new episodes dropping every Sunday at 10:30 PM ET.
