Rachel Zegler suddenly leaves 'Evita' during the performance because of illness

Rachel Zegler had to abruptly leave the stage on Thursday night.

The 24-year-old actress, who is currently performing in “Evita” at the London Palladium, exited her evening show due to illness.

During the intermission, the announcement of Zegler’s departure was made.

Bella Brown, a cast member from “Snow White,” stepped in during the second act and kicked off the scene with the well-known song “Argentina, Who Doesn’t Cry.”

Despite the unexpected change, the audience responded positively to Brown’s performance, applauding her with a standing ovation lasting nearly five minutes.

She and the rest of the cast bowed multiple times.

In her Instagram Stories, Brown expressed how vital backup performers are in the industry, stating, “They are the pillars of the show!! I’m proud to be in ‘Evita.'”

She later added, “A lucky audience got to see both me and my angel Rachel!”

In “Evita,” Zegler portrays the former first lady of Argentina, a role in the musical that first debuted in 1978, created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

On Thursday, Zegler managed to perform during the matinee before leaving mid-show. It’s unclear whether she will return on Friday.

She is set to star in “Evita” until September 6, with the production having begun in June.

Zegler expressed her gratitude in a previous message, sharing her deep love for everyone involved in the production, reflecting on how surreal it is to live out her dreams surrounded by amazing people.

Back in March, she mentioned that being part of the Jamie Lloyd-directed “Evita” had always been a long-held aspiration.

“Evita has been very special to me since childhood,” she recalled, mentioning how her dad would sing “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” with her.

After the opening night, some criticism emerged regarding her performance. In the show, Zegler sings from a balcony, leading to mixed reactions from the audience about the experience of witnessing iconic moments on screen rather than live.

Some attendees were enthusiastic, while others felt disappointed about the cost of tickets versus the streaming experience.

Not everyone minded the change, as some noted it helps audiences who can’t afford to attend the West End performance live.

In her personal life, Zegler has been spotted getting cozy with backup dancer Nathan Louis Fernando at Hyde Park.

Earlier this month, they appeared together at a concert, holding hands and enjoying each other’s company.

The professional dancer has experience in shows like “Magic Mike Live” and has shared clips from his time there.

Zegler previously dated her “Hunger Games” co-star, but their relationship quietly ended last year.

This new role comes amid a tumultuous period for Zegler, who faced significant backlash last year while promoting Disney’s live-action “Snow White.”

She has been vocal about her views, even critiquing those who supported Donald Trump in the 2024 election and describing the original 1937 film negatively.

Moreover, reports suggest she and co-star Gal Gadot had disagreements related to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The film didn’t perform well financially, with projections estimating a loss of around $115 million.
