Racing star Scott Bloomquist died in a plane crash Friday morning near his home in Mooresburg, Tennessee, multiple media outlets reported.
Bloomquist was reportedly piloting the plane when the “small plane crash” occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. ET.
The 60-year-old is one of the most highly regarded racers in history and was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2002.
Bloomquist’s illustrious resume includes three Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series wins, eight Dirt Late Model Dream Series wins and four World 100 wins.
Additionally, Bloomquist won the 2004 World of Outlaws Late Model Series and was named the 2006 RPM Racing News Driver of the Year.
Tributes flooded social media honoring Bloomquist and his impact on the sports world.
“One of the saddest days in dirt racing history,” one user wrote, garnering over 1,000 likes.
“There is a level of pure, uncompromising villainy that humanity will never reach again. Scott Bloomquist took it a level above that.” another wrote. “May the soul of this legendary man rest in peace.”
“This is really terrible news.” Added Couch Racer Shop. “The word legend is sometimes used a little too often, but it’s the only way to describe Scott Bloomquist. May Bloomer rest in peace.”
Bloomquist, who has more than 600 career wins, has been plagued by a number of serious injuries over the past few years.
In 2019, he was in a motorcycle accident that left him with injured legs and hips.
Four years later, Bloomquist was battling prostate cancer while suffering from back pain.
Despite this, Bloomquist is reportedly looking to get back on track and race in major series competition in 2024.
Bloomquist’s most recent wins came at the Dirt Late Model Dream event in 2017 and 2018, and he has won four times in his career.
