Controversy Over Cubs’ Absence for Memorial Service
Gary Cohen, the play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets, recently voiced strong criticism regarding the Chicago Cubs’ decision to skip games on Sunday to attend a memorial for Charlie Kirk in Arizona. This comment stirred considerable backlash on a sports radio show hosted by Gregg Giannotti of WFAN, who had some pointed remarks for Cohen.
Giannotti, co-hosting “Boomer and Geo,” expressed his disapproval, especially since Kirk’s wife had reached out personally to the show to encourage attendance due to a friendship. The Cubs, at that time, found themselves in a tight pennant race and narrowly lost a game to the Cincinnati Reds, 1-0, on that Sunday.
Expressing his thoughts, Giannotti said, “Honestly, I didn’t appreciate his commentary, although I’m not about to judge Gary Cohen. He’s been an important figure in sports for me for many years. However, it seemed completely unnecessary.”
He further added, “Who cares? If he wants to go to the service, then he should be able to.” It seems Giannotti feels Cohen was misplacing anger onto the Cubs for allowing their player, Matt Shaw, to attend the memorial.
Cohen mentioned he didn’t want to delve into the “politics” surrounding the event but acknowledged that the death of Shaw’s friend had significant emotional weight. Giannotti and former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason argued that by making the statement Cohen did, he had indeed stepped into political territory.
Esiason remarked, “Saying what you said makes it political.” The discussion heated up further as they examined how the situation surrounding Shaw’s absence was more complex than Cohen initially suggested.
Shaw explained that his bond with Charlie Kirk stemmed from shared values and experiences, presenting a deeper feeling than just a professional commitment. He noted that the support he received from team management helped empower his decision to attend the memorial. “It’s my faith that drives me every day,” Shaw stated, underscoring how this connection influenced his choice amidst the crucial season.
Ultimately, the debate highlighted various perspectives on prioritizing personal relationships versus professional responsibilities during tense game schedules.
