Radio station in Florida boosts ratings threefold after rebranding as Trump Country

Florida Radio Station Rebrands as “Trump Country”

A radio station in Florida has successfully rebranded itself as “Trump Country” 93.7 FM, aligning closely with the persona of President Donald Trump. This move reflects a broader cultural embrace of the MAGA movement.

Whel Radio, a country station located in Fort Myers, adopted this branding following Trump’s overwhelming electoral victory. They celebrated the rebranding on inauguration day, inspired by the visible support for Trump seen at boat parades and rallies.

“We made this brand decision shortly after the election,” said Jim Schwartzel, the station’s general manager. The response from listeners has been overwhelmingly positive, with audience numbers swelling since the change. “People who find us tend to stick around,” he added, emphasizing that listeners spend an average of 5 hours and 45 minutes tuned into the station, showcasing high engagement.

Since March, WHEL has tripled its ratings in key demographics, especially as Trump secured 64% of the vote in Lee County during the 2024 presidential election, positioning the station effectively within the community.

Schwartzel is keen on maintaining a local focus, stating that the station reflects the music and culture of southwestern Florida. They’ve introduced creative on-air promotions, including humorous segments where Trump impersonators jokingly offer trips to Mexico on a “big beautiful cruise ship” as a satirical take on “deportation.” “You have to listen to win,” the impersonators say, indicating that there’s a playful and engaging atmosphere at the station.

The station also hosts promotions like “The Cancel Bowl,” where listeners can call in and share their opinions, with a prize awarded each week—a “Trump Country Tailgate Command Kit” featuring grill accessories and themed items, fostering community interaction.

Interestingly, Schwartzel is now also running for the Florida Legislature as a Republican, aiming to fill the seat currently held by Rep. Byron Donald. He has expressed that he wants to support Trump and advocate for conservative principles in the region. It adds another layer of ambition to his connection with the brand and its audience.

Overall, Whel Radio’s embracing of the “Trump Country” identity reflects a unique blend of local culture and national politics, resonating with listeners who are eager to celebrate their values and community. The White House has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this development.
