Rafael Devers Makes Waves with Giants Debut
In an unexpected move, Rafael Devers played as a first baseman during his second game with the San Francisco Giants against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. This was part of a three-game series between the two teams.
What’s intriguing is that, prior to this, Devers had been quite firm about wanting to stick to designated hitter duties from his time with the Boston Red Sox. So, his debut as a first baseman certainly raised some eyebrows. But what he said after the game might surprise you even more.
Devers expressed how much he enjoys defending, stating that being on the field keeps him active and distracts him from overthinking his batting. “It keeps me engaged,” he explained. “You know, I’d rather be out there than just thinking about when my next at-bat is going to be.” It’s an interesting perspective, and one that perhaps many players can relate to.
Spring Training Surprises
This season didn’t get off to the smoothest start for Devers. There were whispers during spring training that he was having some disagreements with Red Sox manager Alex Cora about whether he would primarily play first base. Right before opening day, Cora announced that Devers would take on the designated hitter role full-time. But then, an injury to the main first baseman, Triston Casas, threw everything into disarray.
Interestingly, though, there were talks—albeit ones Devers apparently shut down—about him taking on more responsibilities, reportedly suggested by Craig Breslow, the former pitcher and now a key figure in the Red Sox organization.
Devers reflected on how constraints were communicated to him, saying, “I am a player, but they shouldn’t expect me to cover every position.” It seems the dynamics in the clubhouse can be quite complex, shifting from one game to the next.
In his debut with the Giants, Devers ended up scoring two base hits. The Giants triumphed with a solid 9-0 victory over the Braves, wrapping up the series on a high note.
