Rafael Devers Begins New Chapter with the San Francisco Giants
Rafael Devers has officially started his journey with the San Francisco Giants, making an impression during his first press conference. He expressed excitement and commitment as he faces questions about his role with the team after being traded from the Boston Red Sox, a move that caught many by surprise.
On Tuesday, in the lead-up to his debut, Devers participated in Bay Area media, sharing insights as he prepares to take the field as the designated hitter. There’s a lingering question about where he’ll fit, especially considering Matt Chapman’s established position at third base.
Interestingly, Devers seems unconcerned about position. “I’m here to give you 100%,” he stated through an interpreter, emphasizing that he’s ready to play wherever the team needs him.
This marks a notable shift in tone from his tenure with the Red Sox, where he had been reluctant to budge at third base. During the previous season, he made it clear he wouldn’t yield that spot to Alex Bregman, another star third baseman. Following discussions with Coach Alex Cora and the front office, he seemed to reconsider his stance, though tensions escalated when teammate Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury.
Devers made it clear he prefers a full-time designated hitter role rather than rotating between positions. It’s rumored there were some disagreements with the Red Sox front office, although he reportedly didn’t want to be traded. The Red Sox’s general manager, Craig Breslow, mentioned that the organization had “a different vision” for Devers than he did, highlighting some disconnect.
Devers had signed a substantial 10-year, $313.5 million deal with the Red Sox in early 2023, making him a pivotal player in their lineup.
Now, with the Giants taking on the entirety of that contract, there’s plenty of anticipation about what Devers can bring to the National League West. The team’s management is clearly looking forward to integrating him into their lineup as they head into the new season.
