Rafael Devers Embraces New Role with Giants
Rafael Devers, now officially a San Francisco Giant, has shifted his perspective on where he’s willing to play. “They’re the ones in charge,” he explained at his introductory press conference. “I’m here to play wherever they want me.” This marks a notable change from earlier in the season when he declined to play first base for the Red Sox.
Devers is expected to take the designated hitter role, batting third in the Giants’ upcoming match against the Guardians. Manager Bob Melvin indicated that they will initially use Devers in a mix of DH and first base, emphasizing the importance of making him comfortable in his new position.
“We’ll work with him on some ground balls first, just to ensure he feels at ease before fully placing him there,” Melvin mentioned.
When asked about the conclusion of his time in Boston, Devers opted not to delve into the past, stating, “I look forward to moving beyond the situation in Boston and becoming a San Francisco Giant.”
In a recent trade, the Red Sox and Giants completed a significant deal, sending Devers along with right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs III, and right-handed pitching prospect Jose Bello to Boston.
Buster Posey, the president of Giants’ baseball operations, noted that the team had been negotiating with the Red Sox for about three to four weeks prior to finalizing the trade.
During the press conference, Devers expressed gratitude towards the Red Sox for signing him at 16, which allowed him to pursue a career in Major League Baseball. He also shared his excitement about joining the Giants, noting, “I’m thrilled to meet Barry Bonds,” who was present and celebrated as MLB’s all-time home run leader.
