Raffensperger Announces Governor Bid Amid GOP Tensions
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has decided to run for governor in 2026, a move that adds intrigue to an already competitive Republican primary race featuring Lt. Col. Burt Jones and state attorney general Chris Kerr.
Raffensperger, known as a conservative Republican, had previously resisted attempts to overturn the 2020 election results that favored President Joe Biden, resulting in some tensions within the party. Interestingly, Trump had endorsed Jones for the gubernatorial race just last month.
He stated, “I’m a conservative Republican prepared to make hard choices. I’ll uphold the law and the constitution. My goal is always to do what’s right for Georgia.” Raffensperger’s agenda includes aims to cut state income taxes, reduce property taxes for seniors, eliminate fees for home buyers, expand school choice tax credits, and implement strict regulations on drugs impacting adolescents.
He also emphasized a commitment to work alongside Trump and other congressional leaders to enhance law enforcement and address illegal immigration in Georgia communities.
At 70, Raffensperger faces challenges yet again. He, alongside Republican Governor Brian Kemp, had previously resisted Trump’s calls in January 2020 to “find” enough votes to support Trump’s claims of fraud in Georgia’s election results. Raffensperger maintained that the data was accurate, which didn’t help his standing with some within the party.
Trump’s influence has been significant, notably supporting primary challengers to both Kemp and Raffensperger in the past. However, both had prevailed against Trump-backed candidates in their respective races.
Kevin Donohoe from the Democratic Governors Association commented on Raffensperger’s announcement, suggesting it complicates the already “messy” primary for both Jones and Kerr.
This announcement comes just after former Republican Lieutenant Colonel Geoff Duncan revealed his intention to run as a Democrat for the governorship. Duncan has been vocal in criticizing Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and switched political allegiances earlier this summer.
Overall, Georgia, once seen as a Republican stronghold, has transformed into a pivotal battleground in recent election cycles. Republicans have managed to secure every governor’s seat in the state since 2002.
