Raiders implement significant adjustments to failing team lineup

Dont’e Thornton has been given more time to demonstrate his value to the Raiders.

Now, it’s crucial that he makes the most of this chance.

The Raiders, currently in the midst of a four-game losing streak, activated the second-year wide receiver from injured reserve on Tuesday. In a related move, they released defensive tackle Jonah Laulu. This decision keeps Thornton’s season active and offers the struggling offense another option as Las Vegas seeks to break its losing streak.

Thornton’s practice window was opened on October 7, which set a 21-day evaluation period that was nearing expiration. If he hadn’t been activated, he would have remained on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Now, he has a shot to transform his physical talent into something beneficial for the Raiders.

However, just because he’s healthy doesn’t mean he automatically gets a spot on the roster. Coach Klint Kubiak has been clear that Thornton needed to show he was ready to step in, and he wasn’t activated for Sunday’s loss to the Rams.

Tuesday’s activation clears one barrier. Now, gaining playing time and earning the trust of the coaching staff is the next goal.

The Raiders’ wide receiver group could soon be even busier, with Jack Bech also eligible to return from the injured list, following a broken forearm he sustained in Week 3 against the Saints.

Thornton was a fourth-round pick from Tennessee in 2025, bringing with him an appealing mix of size and speed. The real challenge for him has been turning those attributes into the consistency needed to thrive against NFL defenses.

For the Raiders, who are looking for reliable contributions beyond Tre Tucker, there’s an opportunity here.

Thornton isn’t expected to fix everything. He simply needs to provide the Raiders a reason to put him on the field, whether that’s stretching the defense, creating separation, or being a dependable target for quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Laulu’s exit became a realistic option over recent weeks, especially after he was inactive against the Rams, a game that further deepened concerns about the Raiders’ roster.

For Thornton, the immediate mystery has been resolved. The Raiders opted to keep his opportunity alive.

What unfolds next will reveal if they’ve welcomed another available receiver or someone who could help shift the course of their season.
