Fernando Mendoza Claims Raiders Have Largest Hispanic Fan Base

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who was selected first overall in the NFL Draft, expressed pride in joining what he described as the “largest Hispanic fan base.” He made this statement during the team’s press conference.

“The Raiders have a significant history, particularly among the Hispanic community. Legends like Mr. Plunkett and [Tom] Flores are a big part of that,” Mendoza noted, referencing the franchise’s celebrated figures. “As a Cuban-American, this opportunity to join the Raiders is very meaningful to me. I know I need to prove myself, but I’m excited to connect with our community here,” he added.

Mendoza himself has Cuban roots and is a descendant of Cuban refugees.

After Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, all four of his grandparents left the country and moved to the U.S. Mendoza’s maternal grandfather, Alberto Espino, once reflected, “We thought it would be temporary; surely the U.S. wouldn’t allow a communist regime so close.” Yet, as Castro’s reign persisted, they stayed in the U.S. and forged their lives as Americans.

Mendoza, who had an exceptional season at Indiana, now faces the challenge of guiding the Raiders back to their former glory after years of struggles.

“It’s a significant responsibility, but also an incredible honor,” he stated. “The Raiders are a hallmark of the NFL’s history, and I know I have to earn my place here daily.” He emphasized the importance of hard work, especially as a rookie, saying, “Nothing is given; everything is earned. I plan to be humble, set a strong example, and I understand it is one thing to say these words, and another to truly deliver.”
