Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins excited to collaborate with Fernando Mendoza

LAS VEGAS — Kirk Cousins Joins the Raiders in Preparation for New Era

Kirk Cousins opened his eyes, fully aware that Fernando Mendoza was about to enter the room, and seized the moment to join the Raiders in Las Vegas. It’s interesting to think about how, just three years ago, he probably wouldn’t have imagined this scenario. The Raiders are likely to draft Mendoza first overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, and many of their decisions now center around supporting the emerging face of their franchise.

Beneath Cousins’ polite demeanor and strong values, there’s a fierce competitive spirit and self-belief. In his younger days, he would have preferred a simpler quarterback situation—one with a clearer path to starting. But that mindset is what propelled him from a fourth-round pick to one of the most efficient and highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. Over the years, Cousins has played for the Commanders, Vikings, and Falcons, amassing impressive stats: 44,700 yards, 298 touchdowns, and over $300 million in earnings.

However, with the passage of time, injuries, and the realization that he’s closer to the end of his career, Cousins’ priorities and outlook have shifted. Joining the Raiders presented him an opportunity to reconnect with the coaching staff that helped him thrive, settle into a new part of the country, and play a pivotal role in guiding Mendoza toward success.

At this point in his career, these factors resonate deeply with him. “I truly believe in people winning,” Cousins shared. “That’s part of why being with this group is meaningful; it’s about surrounding myself with talented individuals.”

His potential roles with the Raiders vary greatly—from being the team’s starter this season to acting as a guiding presence for Mendoza should things not go as planned. Now at 37, Cousins has come to terms with whatever unfolds. He expressed this sentiment during conversations with new Raiders manager Clint Kubiak, someone he’s worked with previously in Minnesota.

If the Raiders ultimately choose to start Mendoza, that’s perfectly fine with Cousins. Whether it happens early in the season or later on, he’s okay with it. “Everyone wants to play, but I’ve made it clear to Clint that the best player needs to be on the field,” he stated. “If that’s not me, then I don’t want to take the position.” He emphasizes his eagerness to contribute positively, whether leading or guiding from behind.

It wasn’t an easy decision, but after careful reflection, some prayer, and a timely call from Tom Brady—who plays a significant role in the Raiders’ operations—Cousins decided to follow his instincts and join the team. “Maybe my instincts were off, but I went with them. They told me this is where I should be,” Cousins mentioned, accepting the uncertainty that comes with the choice.

His contract with the Raiders is essentially a one-year deal worth $20 million, following a difficult Achilles injury during his last season with the Vikings. The Falcons are covering $8.3 million of this contract. While not all of Cousins’ past earnings are guaranteed, he feels good about the chance to end his career in Las Vegas, possibly becoming a driving force to help restore one of sports’ most iconic franchises. He expressed astonishment at the environment in the Raiders’ facility, appreciating the presence of Al Davis’ inspirational words.

“I love seeing Al Davis’ words throughout the building,” Cousins remarked. “One of my favorite quotes is, ‘The greatness of the Raiders lies in their future.’ It’s encouraging and filled with hope.” He enjoys walking past such motivating messages daily.

Cousins has already begun mentoring Mendoza, as the rookie’s visit to the Raiders coincided with Cousins’ official signing and the launch of the offseason program. They’ve even started reviewing game footage together. “He seems like a fantastic person, and if we’re fortunate enough to draft him, it’ll be exciting to collaborate,” Cousins said.
