Raiders release Germaine Pratt during Pete Carroll's difficult beginning

Change in Las Vegas: The Raiders’ Surprising Move

It’s pretty clear that Las Vegas was in need of some changes.

But it was the Raiders’ decision that caught many off guard.

The team recently let go of Jermaine Pratt, one of their standout linebackers, after he played just five games this season. This unexpected move was announced by head coach Pete Carroll, who mentioned that Pratt didn’t travel with the team before their significant 40-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Carroll was somewhat vague about the reasons behind this decision, stating that the team “decided to go in a different direction.”

Pratt, who is 29, was seen as a key part of the Weekside linebackers group, alongside Jamal Adams and Devin White.

ESPN reported that his stint in Las Vegas lasted only four games, during which he allowed 74 yards on 105 coverage snaps, achieving a passer rating of 70.7 on 13 targets while defending.

The North Carolina State University graduate had signed a one-year, $4.25 million deal with the Raiders in June. His previous achievements include a career-high of 143 tackles, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries while playing for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Pratt had been released by the Bengals after a notable six-season run, which included contributions to winning the AFC North Championship in 2021 and 2022, as well as competing in the AFC Championship Game.

Throughout his 96 career games, he recorded 616 tackles, 23 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles, and seven interceptions.

As Carroll navigates his first year with the Raiders, he’s confronted challenges with a current record of 1-4. Reflecting on this turbulent time, he remarked, “The response is inadequate.” Las Vegas has now lost four consecutive games following the loss to the Colts, marking one of Carroll’s most significant defeats in his coaching career.

“Honestly, I thought we had what it took to win right from the start, so this is unfortunate,” Carroll expressed to reporters after the game.

In Week 6, the Raiders will aim to turn things around against the Tennessee Titans, who also have a record of 1-4, at Allegiant Stadium this Sunday.
