Raiders to hire Buccaneers exec John Spytek to be GM

John Spytek leaves the pirate ship to go to the Strip.

The Raiders plan to hire the longtime Buccaneers executive as their new general manager, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Spytek has ties to Las Vegas minority owner Tom Brady, having played with the former QB at the University of Michigan and won a Super Bowl with him in Tampa Bay decades ago. He was the assistant GM.

He becomes the Raiders' third full-time general manager in three seasons, having fired Tom Telesco after a year after a 4-13 season.

The team also stepped down from coach Antonio Pierce after the season, leaving them in the market for their eighth head coach since 2012.

Since losing in the Super Bowl in 2003, the franchise has won two seasons and made the playoffs twice.

With Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, helping make decisions about football in Vegas, the hope is that Spytech can bring the Raiders back to their late 1980s glory days.

The 44-year-old joined the team after working as a Lions operations intern in 2004 and as a scout for the Eagles, Browns and Broncos before joining the Bucks in 2016.

He inherits a team with a franchise building block in tight end Brock Bowers, who is a free agent with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and an estimated $108 million in cap space. They lack an entry quarterback and running back.

First up is hiring a coach, with the team already interviewing Pete Carroll, Ron Rivera, Robert Saleh and Vance Joseph, with Ben Johnson (Bears) and Aaron Glenn (Jets) off the market. .
