Raiders wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr. skips his fourth consecutive practice

Donte Thornton Jr. Faces Increasing Pressure

Donte Thornton Jr. can’t stay sidelined much longer.

The Raiders receiver missed practice four consecutive times. According to reports, his absence continued on Wednesday, starting from when he left a session early last week. There’s still no word on what injury he has or when he might return.

While the immediate concern is about his availability for the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, the bigger issue is the competitive landscape among the Las Vegas receivers. Every missed practice puts him further behind in a crowded field.

Thornton arrived at training camp aiming for a bigger role after a rookie season where he managed just 135 yards on 10 catches out of 30 targets. At 6-foot-5 with a 4.3-second 40-yard dash, he’s got a unique physical advantage, but translating that into consistent output has been a struggle for him.

Before his injury, there were reports that he had difficulty getting separation from backup cornerbacks in one-on-one drills. Meanwhile, rookie Malik Benson, drafted in the sixth round, has begun earning first-team snaps and is proving to be a valuable asset, especially on special teams.

This shift significantly alters the competition among Raiders receivers, which was previously seen as stagnant.

The first unofficial depth chart lists Jalen Naylor, Jack Beck, and Tre Tucker as the starting receivers. Sure, these depth charts can change before the season, but Thornton’s absence from the first group indicates that others have already started to pull ahead this summer.

General manager John Spytek was optimistic about Thornton before camp began. Given the team’s investment in him and his athletic abilities, it seems unlikely that four missed practices will seal his fate. Yet, the path to valuable playing time is definitely tightening.

Thornton also doesn’t have a defined role on special teams, amplifying the need for him to perform offensively. Benson provides a potential option for returning punts, while Beck is seen as more dependable for route running.

Rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza is expected to see significant action in the preseason, and Thornton could have had a great chance to showcase himself in Thursday’s game. However, it’s unclear if he’ll be fit to participate.

Right now, Thornton isn’t just aiming for a spot on the roster but is trying to avoid being sidelined altogether. Unfortunately, his fourth straight absence pushes him closer to that uncertain fate.
