Mamdani’s Wife Faces Backlash for Choosing Retreat Over 250th Celebration

Rama Duwaj, the wife of New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, faced criticism over the July 4th weekend for opting to attend an Islamic wellness retreat in Mallorca, Spain, instead of participating in festivities marking America’s 250th anniversary. While celebrations unfolded across the country, Duwaj’s absence stood out, drawing comments from various political figures.

Reports indicate that Duwaj was seen at Newark International Airport as she boarded a flight to Palma, heading to a retreat organized by the Women’s Sanctuary. This decision didn’t sit well with some local officials. Queens Republican City Councilwoman Joan Arriola expressed her discontent, stating, “Nothing says ‘America 250’ more than missing a celebration for a Mediterranean vacation. I’m not surprised that she’s made her hate for America so obvious.”

Additionally, Republican Staten Island City Councilman Frank Morano criticized Duwaj’s choice to be overseas during such a significant civic event. He emphasized that it’s not about restricting travel but about the responsibility of being present during important occasions. Morano remarked, “It is unfortunate that the first lady has chosen to be overseas and not participate in one of the biggest civic events our city and country commemorates this year.”

He further pointed out that while it’s acceptable for elected officials to take time off, this particular moment warranted attendance. Comments on social media also reflected similar sentiments, with conservative commentator Allyn Wexler highlighting the timing of Duwaj’s trip, especially as Mayor Mamdani urged New Yorkers to reduce their air conditioning use amid the heat wave.

Meanwhile, Mamdani remained in the city, focusing on the challenges posed by the heat. His office had recently announced measures to expand cooling centers and manage energy demands during peak times. The ongoing discussions around Duwaj’s retreat continue to resonate, illustrating the tension between public duty and personal choices in the realm of politics.

The Women’s Sanctuary promoted the retreat as focusing on spiritual wellness through workshops and reflections on plants mentioned in the Koran. Although many see the value in self-care, the clash between this retreat and the anniversary celebrations has sparked significant debate.
