Vivek Ramaswami on Wednesday defended former President Trump's stance on the issue, arguing that abortion is “no longer a presidential issue.”
CNN's Kate Bolduin pressed Ramaswamy about President Trump's recent comments about Florida's ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, suggesting that the president has made contradictory statements on the issue. Ramaswamy argued that President Trump believes abortion should be left to the states and that he does not support a federal ban on abortion.
He also argued that abortion is not an important issue for the president, even though voters have repeatedly said it is a top concern this election season.
“One thing I admire a lot about Donald Trump is that this is a states issue in a post-Dobbs world. That was my position during the presidential campaign. I think Roe was rightly overturned, and I think most Republicans would agree with me on that,” Ramaswamy said.
“This is now a state issue. I know Democrats want to make this a major issue, but the reality is, this is no longer a presidential issue. This is a state issue,” he added.
President Trump made a number of comments about abortion last week, including calling Florida's ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy too strict and claiming on social media that his administration would be “great for women and their reproductive rights.” Shortly after, Trump said he would vote against a referendum that would overturn Florida's law and protect abortion access.
Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for overturning Roe v. Wade and has said he would not sign a nationwide abortion ban.He refused to sayWould he veto such a ban if it reached his desk?
Ramaswami pushed back against Harris' campaign criticism of President Trump's stance on abortion, despite the fact that Vice President Harris has repeatedly attacked President Trump over abortion and has vowed to continue to support abortion access.
“Kamala Harris made a false statement when she incorrectly suggested that Donald Trump would sign a federal anti-abortion bill. While I believe that in this case is a complete lie, Trump is clear that he opposes the federal government's position on this issue, and I think voters deserve that clarity,” Ramaswami said Wednesday.
