Jared Goff was the top overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. A year later, the Rams made a surprising move by hiring 31-year-old Sean McVay.

McVay became the youngest person to be selected for the NFL head coaching role in the modern era.

Goff struggled in his rookie season, throwing five touchdowns and seven interceptions in seven games. The Rams finished 4-12 in 2016 and parted ways with Jeff Fisher. In 2021, Goff was traded to the Lions for draft picks and veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The Lions are the reigning NFC North champions and are preparing to host Stafford and the Rams on Sunday in what will be their first postseason game at Ford Field.

Goff recently announced that he will play in the playoff game against his former team with a shoulder injury. McVeigh believes Goff's feelings are valid.

McVay, now in his seventh year with the Rams, expressed regret over the way the Goff trade was handled.

“Could I have handled it better? Absolutely,” McVeigh said. “I never run away from it. But the more I get away from it, the more I try to grow as a person, as a man, as a leader. He has more to offer than the way everything went wrong. I deserved a good review. I'll admit that. And I think he knows that too. And I'm not afraid to admit those things, but I think we're all better off being able to reflect on those things. And I'm more grateful to him. Time moves on. ”

McVay also praised Goff's growth during his tenure in Detroit. “He's done a great job for them. They've been one of the top offenses in the last few years,” McVay said.

Goff helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance. Los Angeles' offense struggled in Super Bowl LII without a healthy Todd Gurley, ultimately losing 13-3 to the New England Patriots.
