Rams fans might reconsider the choice of Ty Simpson following Drew Allar's debut.

The Los Angeles Rams haven’t seen Ty Simpson on the field yet, but another rookie quarterback has already raised some eyebrows. Drew Allar, picked in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers, had a strong preseason debut on Thursday. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards, threw for two touchdowns, and even added a rushing score in a 28-9 victory against Green Bay. Allar guided the Steelers to touchdowns on all three of his drives, wrapping up with an impressive passer rating of 154.8.

Of course, it’s still very early to draw any conclusions about either player’s future, especially since they both played against backup defenses.

However, the differences might be hard for the Rams to overlook.

Los Angeles made Simpson the 13th overall pick, which raised some eyebrows as a significant move. In contrast, Pittsburgh waited until the 76th pick to get Allar.

Simpson’s selection generated some immediate backlash since the Rams are in pursuit of a Super Bowl, expecting high performance from reigning MVP Matthew Stafford. Many believe they could have used that top pick to add a player who might contribute more immediately.

Allar’s performance only adds fuel to that ongoing discussion.

The former Penn State quarterback appeared composed, reading defenses well and evading pressure. His first touchdown drive included a striking 75-yard pass to Kaden Wetchen, followed by a rushing touchdown from Allar himself. He also led additional scoring drives of 89 and 60 yards.

Simpson will have his chance to play this Saturday against Kansas City, albeit in a different role than what he might have expected.

Head Coach Sean McVay announced that Stetson Bennett IV will start in the preseason opener, with Simpson slated to come in later. Bennett has taken on substantial responsibilities during training camp, thereby turning what was supposed to be a developmental year for Simpson into a competition for the second-string quarterback spot.

The significance of this competition is heightened by Stafford’s age and the uncertainties surrounding the Rams’ backup quarterback situation.

Simpson’s limited experience was always part of the conversation; he started just 15 college games. The Rams’ hope was that with McVay, Stafford, and some time, Simpson could become a key long-term player for the franchise.

Still, nothing from Allar’s performance on Thursday is likely to alter that vision.

A first-round quarterback inevitably gets compared to later picks, especially if someone chosen much later, like Allar, seems to fit in seamlessly from the get-go.

Allar certainly made a positive impression during his debut with the Steelers.

This leaves Simpson with the opportunity to make Rams fans question if they may have gambled incorrectly in selecting him over other quarterbacks.
