Rams make a surprising move, choosing Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft

Ty Simpson Selected by the Rams in NFL Draft

The storyline leading up to the NFL Draft regarding Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson had everyone curious about his future. As it turns out, fans didn’t have to wait long for an answer.

The Los Angeles Rams made a bold move by choosing Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

This decision, while somewhat unexpected, could be the ideal situation for Simpson. Despite having Matthew Stafford as their starting quarterback, there’s been ongoing speculation about Stafford’s potential retirement over the past couple of years. It’s evident that his career is nearing its end, possibly sooner than later.

With Simpson now in the mix, he gets the chance to learn the ropes behind an established veteran without immediate pressure to perform. Additionally, the Rams are recognized as one of the most effectively managed franchises in the league. Head coach Sean McVay, who has previously led the team to a Super Bowl victory at the conclusion of the 2021 season, remains an asset. The team just fell short of another Super Bowl appearance last year against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship.

What really stands out is the Rams’ shift in focus toward the future. This is a franchise that historically has been unafraid to trade first-round picks in pursuit of immediate success. Many believed the Rams would use the 13th pick to bolster their roster, especially considering this might be Stafford’s last chance to contend. Yet, they’ve instead opted to start thinking about life after Stafford.

The 2026 NFL Draft saw its fair share of surprises within the first 13 selections. The Cardinals went with Notre Dame running back Jeremiah Love at the third spot, while the Titans selected Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate at fourth. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to secure LSU cornerback Mansour Delaine at sixth, and the Cowboys moved to snag Ohio State safety Caleb Downs at 11.

However, the Rams’ decision to break from their usual strategy—trading future picks to improve their immediate standing—to select a possible successor to Stafford might be the most remarkable twist of the early Draft.
