Rams’ Puka Nacua makes bid for catch of the year with helmet grab

There's something about this season's “Thursday Night Football” and outrageous catches.

After the Jets' Garrett Wilson hit Odell Beckham Jr. for a one-handed touchdown in October, Rams star Puka Nacua caught the 49ers defender with an outrageous grab with the help of his helmet. He was nominated for the catcher of the year award. Similar to David Tyree's infamous Super Bowl catch.

On Los Angeles' second drive of the game, quarterback Matthew Stafford stepped back and threw a quick out route to the far side of the field, leaving the ball a little high for Nacua to pounce and make the grab.

And when Nacua jumped, 49ers defensive back Charvarius Ward was looking at Nacua instead of looking for the ball, trying to knock it out of his hands or take the wideout.

But instead, Nacua used Ward's helmet and left shoulder to hold onto the ball and complete a 7-yard pickup.

The second-year receiver entered Thursday's game after having his best week of the year, with 12 grabs for 162 yards, including a touchdown, in Sunday's game against the Bills.

One of those 12 receptions was an incredibly acrobatic sideline catch in which he almost magically kept his toes on the far sideline.

But with a helmet catch four days later, Nacua may have one-upped himself.
