Rams surprise Eagles with amazing comeback in the fourth quarter led by Kyren Williams

Rams Overcome Eagles in Dramatic Comeback

PHILADELPHIA — Perhaps the rain didn’t ruin the Rams’ season after all. Maybe it revitalized it in an unexpected way.

For a good portion of the game on Sunday at the drenched Lincoln Financial Field, the Rams seemed intent on burying themselves under a pile of errors.

Matthew Stafford threw two interceptions. Special teams allowed a significant punt return. Harrison Mevis missed a field goal attempt. Tyler Higbee dropped a crucial fourth-down pass. Entering the fourth quarter, the Rams were down by 10, staring at a potential 1-3 record that would have sparked serious doubts about their season’s direction.

And then, everything took a surprising turn.

Kyren Williams scored twice in the fourth quarter, and the Rams’ defense executed a crucial goal-line stop. They managed to erase a 10-point deficit, stunning the Eagles with a 24-20 victory, ending a four-game losing streak against them and achieving one of the most unexpected wins under coach Sean McVay.

Some might call it a fortunate victory. Others could see it as simply hanging on. Either way, don’t count the Rams out just yet.

For much of the afternoon, they seemed ready to give this game away.

Stafford’s day started poorly as he was intercepted by Andrew Mukuba right away after an overthrown pass intended for Konata Mumpfield.

The special teams added to the woes when Ethan Evans’ impressive 51-yard punt turned into just a 10-yard net gain after Britain Covey returned it for 41 yards.

Jalen Hurts quickly capitalized and found Darius Cooper for an 18-yard touchdown, extending Philadelphia’s lead to 13-3.

Then came Puka Nacua, who finally lit a spark for the Rams, scoring on a curious jet-sweep handoff from Stafford just before halftime to bring the score down to three points.

But the Rams couldn’t hold onto that momentum. Stafford unwisely targeted Nacua deep again and was intercepted by Cooper DeJean, which allowed Hurts to connect with Cooper for a second touchdown after a debated pass interference call, leaving the score at 20-10.

Things went from bad to worse when Mevis missed a 48-yard field goal wide left.

Just when it seemed like everything was spiraling, the Rams’ defense made a stand. Facing a third-and-goal from the 2, Hurts fumbled the snap and couldn’t find space to run. On fourth down, the Rams pressured him into an incomplete throw aimed at Cooper.

With renewed life, the Rams took over and marched 98 yards down the field. Williams punched it in from a yard out, and suddenly, it was a tight game at 20-17.

The Eagles were no longer comfortably ahead; they were now hanging by a thread.

Then, after another defensive stop, Stafford led the team down the field again. Williams completed the comeback with a second rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, flipping the score to 24-20.

Williams was a standout, accumulating 80 rushing yards, 66 receiving yards, and two critical touchdowns in a game that seemed lost. On the other hand, the Eagles struggled on third downs, going 0-for-12 under pressure, while the Rams managed to convert 7 out of 16.

This game wasn’t a spectacle. It wasn’t without its flaws. But sometimes, a season doesn’t hinge on perfect performances.

Sometimes it’s about just getting through the mess.

What It Means

The Rams may have turned their season around. Instead of limping home at 1-3 after a barrage of errors, they improved to 2-2—defeating an Eagles team that had bested them four times since 2023.

There are still significant issues to address, like Stafford’s turnovers and the special teams’ missteps. One thrilling quarter doesn’t erase those problems.

But as they boarded the flight home, they took with them something invaluable: a win.

Turning Point

When the Eagles had a chance to extend their lead with third-and-goal from the Rams’ 2, they faltered. Hurts bobbled the snap and was pressured into an incompletion on fourth down, allowing Los Angeles to seize control of the game.

What was once looking like an inevitable defeat transformed into an invigorating comeback.

Did You See That?

Puka Nacua made a memorable return, snagging a juggling 28-yard catch, reminding everyone of his talent after being sidelined for two games.
