Rams trade speculation involves a deal for Kayvon Thibodeaux

The Rams are already equipped with a young and formidable defensive front, but trading for Kayvon Thibodeau could really amp up their pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Recently, ESPN’s Seth Walder suggested a trade idea that would send Thibodeau, along with a sixth-round pick in 2028, to Los Angeles in exchange for a third-rounder that same year. This trade seems like a move that would bolster the Rams’ depth, which has been a significant concern.

In the previous season, the Rams’ top four defensive linemen bore a heavy load, comprising nearly 60% of the defensive line’s appearances throughout the year—one of the highest ratios in the league.

While players like Jared Verse and Byron Young were effective, the overall pass rush noticeably faded, particularly as games wore on, especially during the end-of-season stretch and playoffs.

This brings us back to Thibodeau.

As the No. 5 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, he might not be the star of the Giants’ defense anymore—given the recent additions of Brian Barnes and Abdul Carter—but he’s still only 25 and had a solid 2023 season with 11.5 sacks.

Interestingly, Young is the only current Rams player to have recorded more sacks in a single season than Thibodeau, who stands out as a solid run defender and would fit well in Chris Shula’s system without losing any toughness.

From a financial standpoint, this trade appears feasible. Thibodeau is set to play under his fifth-year option, making him an appealing, cost-effective acquisition who can provide rotational depth on the edge and add versatility to a defense that’s relied mostly on stunts and simulated pressures.

However, the real question remains: Do the Rams see him as a long-term asset or just a one-season addition?

Over the next few years, players like Young, Coby Turner, Verse, and Braden Fisk will need new contracts. Trading Thibodeau could complicate negotiations or possibly give the Rams some leverage if there’s uncertainty about who they need to focus on.

For a team with aspirations for another Super Bowl, maintaining a fresh defense is critical. The thought of adding another highly explosive edge rusher seems hard to overlook.
