NFL Season Begins in Australia
This week, the NFL season kicks off in Australia with the Los Angeles Rams facing off against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne. Central to this matchup are two of the biggest names on the Rams’ defensive line: Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald. They’re both aiming for a shot at the Super Bowl this year, so here’s a look at their statuses as the game approaches in Australia.
The Rams decided to hold Myles Garrett back for a significant portion of training camp and preseason due to swelling in his left knee. However, it seems to be improving, as Garrett practiced on Sunday leading up to the game. McVay has confirmed that he will play against the 49ers in Week 1.
Still, there are questions about Garrett’s readiness. The uncertainty surrounding his condition could be strategic, or it might stem from a genuine concern about his knee and the risk of further swelling.

Meanwhile, Aaron Donald’s return has been one of the most surprising stories this offseason. He chose to bypass Hall of Fame eligibility to make another run with the Rams. After passing his physicals and appearing in good shape, it was announced on Tuesday that Donald will not participate in the Australia game.
There’s no injury keeping Donald out; he just isn’t quite prepared for the demands of a full NFL training regimen right now. This decision makes sense, considering the pressure on a retired player to travel halfway around the world and compete on limited prep time.
Donald’s inactivity might hint at the Rams’ approach toward Garrett. While the team could manage without both defensive stars, it seems plausible that Donald sitting out could suggest that Garrett will indeed be active.
