Aaron Donald’s Return to the Rams: Impact and Expectations

Aaron Donald is back with the Los Angeles Rams following a brief retirement. Nick Wright, Chris Broussard, Kevin Wildes, and Greg Jennings ponder whether his return will have an immediate effect and discuss if the Rams’ status as Super Bowl favorites is perhaps a bit overblown. Additionally, Howie Long chimes in on the pressure surrounding Donald as he rejoins the team, and there’s chatter about whether Fernando Mendoza is prepared to start for the Las Vegas Raiders.

This Sunday, however, the Rams will face the Philadelphia Eagles with a shorthanded defense. The absence of Myles Garrett, who remains on injured reserve due to an injury from Week 1 in Australia, is compounded by Donald’s decision not to play. Coach Sean McVay noted that Donald didn’t travel with the team for the season opener because he hadn’t progressed enough in his preparation.

Donald is currently dealing with back issues, which emerged as a concern after he “felt some soreness” following the team’s loss to the Denver Broncos last week. McVay emphasized the importance of protecting Donald, regardless of his eagerness to contribute. “It’s our responsibility as coaches to ensure players have the best chance for success,” he mentioned, adding that while Donald is incredibly tough, he simply isn’t at his best right now. The coach feels that pushing him to play would be irresponsible, and they need to safeguard players like him from their own instincts.

According to McVay, Donald is diligently working to feel better, and there’s a sense of hope for the future. On a brighter note, the Rams will welcome back wide receiver Puka Nacua this Sunday after he missed the last two games due to a hip injury. McVay observed that Nacua “looked sharp” during practice, especially in the more physically demanding drills.

Nacua had an impressive performance in Week 1, recording five receptions for 74 yards. The Rams, considered pre-season favorites for the Super Bowl, are entering Week 4 with a record of 1-2.
