NFC Championship Game Highlights: Rams vs. Seahawks
Mistakes happen often in the high-stakes world of the NFL, and for the Los Angeles Rams, the timing of one particular error during Sunday night’s NFC Championship Game was particularly unfortunate.
In the early moments of the third quarter, the Rams managed to stop the Seattle Seahawks when they really needed it, hoping to either pull within a point or take the lead on their next possession. Then came the punt from Seahawks punter Michael Dixon, which Rams returner Xavier Smith was anticipating.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned for Smith. He miscalculated the ball’s path just before it reached him and ended up falling down. In an awkward attempt to catch it using his back, he completely missed. This opened the door for a Seahawks player to jump in and recover the fumbled punt.
Seahawks’ quarterback Sam Darnold capitalized on the turnover almost immediately, connecting with Jake Bobo for a touchdown that pushed the score to 24-13 early in the third quarter.
Smith faced significant backlash online, with many fans drawing comparisons to Kyle Williams’ infamous mistake during the 2012 NFC Championship while he played for the San Francisco 49ers. Such turnovers can haunt a player, that’s for sure.
Amid this turmoil, though, there was still hope. Matthew Stafford, the Rams’ star quarterback, rallied the team. He managed to lead a successful drive, finding Davante Adams for a touchdown. So, despite Smith’s earlier blunder, the Rams were still firmly in the game.
To put things into perspective, Smith has had a decent season overall, returning 27 punts for 251 yards without a fumble until the game against Seattle, where he fumbled twice. It’s surprising, really, considering he had been so reliable prior to this. In fact, he managed to recover a fumble earlier in the game, so it’s a mix of good and bad for him.
