That’s a foul.
The Los Angeles Dodgers minor league baseball team unwittingly adopted a new nickname for the upcoming series, only to find out they opted for NSFW slang.
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes announced Thursday that they will be “Chaquetas” for the Copa de la Diversión three-tournament series, paying homage to the iconic jackets worn by mariachi players.
The word Chaqueta literally translates from Spanish to English as “jacket”, but it is also a slang term for masturbation.
Although upper management for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Single-A minor league affiliate seemed unaware of the error before the announcement, fans on social media quickly criticized the double meaning of the word.
The Quakes quickly withdrew all announcements regarding the name, while also stepping back to restart the name vetting process.
“We were immediately worried: Did we make an irreversible mistake here?” Grant Riddle, Quakes executive vice president and general manager, told the Los Angeles Times Friday.
“So we quickly re-engaged with those groups…and quickly determined that none of them were aware of that. So it was immediately their first thought. It wasn’t.
“And obviously the idea is that [the slang definition] exists, but our intention was not to provide anything other than a literal translation in any way. We’re not going to enjoy this. ”
Hours later, the team and its officials decided to stick to their guns and bravely reposted an announcement further reinforcing their decision to play as Chaquetas.
“In Southern California, mariachi music is a treasured art form.” Team announcements were read.
The name choice is, in part, a nod to Dodgers pitcher and Rancho Cucamonga resident Joe Kelly, who wore a black mariachi jacket at the team’s White House reception in July 2021.
Riddle said the name “Mariachi” had already been claimed by another team.
“He didn’t just choose an exceptional style. Rather, this pitcher was known for his artistry, long-standing dedication to baseball, teamwork, and the privilege of wearing such a historically significant uniform.” “He respected the most revered qualities of music that he shared with others,” the Quakes wrote.
The Quakes will continue to play as the Quakes, with the exception of three events that are part of the Copa de la Diversión, or Fan Cup.
The series is comprised of events that “embrace the cultures and values that most resonate” with Hispanics in the minor league team’s community. That means each club will change its name for the festival. According to MiLb.
In the past, the Quakes adopted the name “Temblores”, meaning “earthquakes”.
