Senator Questions DHS Nominee on Violence and Anger Issues
During a Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, pressed Markwayne Mullin, the nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security, regarding his temperament and past statements about violence. Paul referenced an incident from November 2017 when his neighbor assaulted him, causing severe injuries including six broken ribs.
In his opening remarks, Paul expressed his concern that someone who appears to endorse violence against political adversaries shouldn’t hold a crucial position in the DHS. He questioned, “It’s shocking to me that you would justify violence and even celebrate it.” He emphasized the personal distress this situation has caused him and his family, adding that it’s only natural for him to feel anger towards Mullin.
Additionally, Paul contested Mullin’s claim that he did not explicitly say that Paul deserved the attack. “You boasted about it,” Paul stated. He urged Mullin to seize the moment to correct the record, implying that Mullin lacked the courage to face the truth of the situation directly.
Mullin responded to this by labeling Paul a “freak snake” at an event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and has shown no intention of apologizing for his comments during the hearing. He seems unbothered about potentially not receiving Paul’s support for his confirmation.
For Mullin to be confirmed, in the event that Paul votes against him, at least one Democratic senator would need to support his nomination. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman mentioned that they are expected to back Mullin on Friday.
Paul’s altercation with his neighbor, Rene Boucher, who charged onto his property and tackled him, resulted in serious injuries that led to part of his lung being surgically removed in 2019.
President Trump nominated Mullin to succeed Kristi Noem as DHS secretary on March 5, following concerns with her responses during two Congressional hearings.
