Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) expressed his willingness to support President Trump’s “big beautiful bill,” even suggesting a reduction in what he termed “bearish and anemia” spending. However, he cautioned that the current proposal could lead to significantly increased debt.
During an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Paul acknowledged the challenges the bill faces after being passed by the House on Thursday morning but reiterated his desire for spending cuts.
“I feel the cuts in the bill are not substantial enough at this point, but even if it doesn’t drastically increase my debt, I’d still back it for its potential to reduce wasteful spending,” he stated.
Paul pointed out that the financial calculations don’t add up, and he has consistently pushed to eliminate the proposed $4 trillion increase in the debt limit, admitting he does not identify strictly as a conservative.
“We need to recognize that our debt and deficits are problematic, and we should aim to move in a different direction,” he remarked.
The House passed the bill during a lengthy session last week, achieving a significant win for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), though it may encounter serious challenges in the Senate.
With the bill’s prospects in limbo, House Republicans are either urging GOP senators to avoid making drastic changes or risk it not passing when they reconvene.
Despite this, Paul remains steadfast in his support, emphasizing that “conservatives need to raise their voices.”
“Someone has to speak up and say, ‘The emperor has no clothes,'” he declared. “Everyone should follow suit and back this ‘big, beautiful bill’ without hesitation.”
“Conservatives need to step up and make their voices heard,” he added. “This is an issue we’ve been dealing with for decades, and if we don’t confront it, I genuinely worry about the future of our country.”
