Randy Moffitt, Former MLB Pitcher, Passes Away

Randy Moffitt, the younger brother of tennis legend Billie Jean King and a former Major League Baseball player, died on Thursday in Long Beach, California, after battling a long illness. He was 76.

Moffitt began his MLB career in 1972 and was the first selection for the San Francisco Giants in the 1970 draft. His playing days extended until 1983, with the last two seasons spent with the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays.

In a statement shared on X, King expressed her sorrow, noting, “Like Billie Jean, Randy embodied self-confidence and competition, carving out a successful career as a pitcher.” She also extended condolences to Moffitt’s family, including his daughters, Myranda Haller and Alicisha Goth.

The San Francisco Giants commemorated his passing, stating they were “deeply saddened” by the loss.

Moffitt was recognized on the Giants’ Wall of Fame in 2008 and was inducted into the Long Beach State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986.

Throughout his career, Moffitt made a name for himself as a reliable option on the mound, finishing among the top 10 in National League saves in four different seasons.

According to team statistics, he ranks ninth in the franchise’s history for career saves, totaling 83, and sixth in games pitched, with 459.

Last April, in a post commemorating National Brothers Day, King reflected on their competitive nature growing up together, describing their childhood as one filled with love and unbreakable bonds.

She fondly remembered him as a “wonderful person” during a recent birthday tribute.
