Rangers defense stifles Hurricanes after injury scares

We all know what Carolina does and how it does it, and it’s generally taken for granted that the Hurricanes can’t completely stop the increase in their shooting numbers.

And after Game 1 of the second round, the Rangers were dealing with an inevitable barrage of 25 shots on net.

So barrage may be the wrong word. Especially when that facial expression appeared as the Hurricanes skated to an empty net in the final minutes of the Rangers’ 4-3 win over him.

With Adam Fox finally playing after a week of scares and K’Andre Miller showing no signs of trouble after getting hit with a puck in the mouth in Saturday’s practice, the Rangers will They put together a very tight defense. shot generation.

“It looks like we did a pretty good job,” Ryan Lindgren said. “I thought the wingers did a great job of getting into the lane in front of the defense. They obviously like to shoot the puck a lot. The wingers got out of there and got into the lane. It’s always huge. The D-zone overall looked like we were playing hard and making it tough on them.”

This wasn’t just a victory that kept the Hurricanes out of the danger zone and won the battle around the net, but the Rangers won Game 1 to open the second round.

It was a victory that suppressed shots from everywhere on the ice, making it a simple afternoon for Igor Shesterkin.

Fulfills expected goals and defensive structure.

“I don’t know how many shots they took or how many blocks they had. Sometimes you have to focus on that more than the shots on net,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “We put a lot of pucks out there. They did a good job of going forward and some missed the net, but yeah, we want more quality chances.”

It wasn’t just 5-on-5.

The Rangers allowed Carolina four power plays and took almost as many shots on those power plays as the Canes.

They then conceded their fifth goal with 40 seconds remaining while still holding a one-point lead, but Carolina quickly reversed when Andrei Svechnikov tripped Lindgren.

The Rangers’ penalty kill prevented the Hurricanes from getting inside, jamming them against the wall and getting the puck up ice at every opportunity.

The two power-play goals scored by the Rangers were important. This one was just as big.

“There was a huge blocked shot in front of me,” Shesterkin said after making 22 saves. “The players play great. And they did everything for me: boxing out, blocking shots, big jobs.”
