Rangers demolished by Blue Jackets as they fumble crucial back-to-back

The Rangers groped the weekend incredibly extremely extreme.

Over two months back in the playoff contest, Blue Heart's losing 7-3 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night had a major impact on the Eastern Conference wildcard race as part of a 0-1-1 effort on a crucial back-to-back slate this weekend.

Rather than once, the Rangers had a chance to step into the top wild card spot in the eastern period after blew a two-goal lead in the third term in a Saturday 4-3 pm overtime loss in Ottawa.

They finish the weekend outside, look at playoff photos and sit down a cut-off line point.

There are fewer opportunities for a significant swing in the rankings in the present time.

“We've come to us in many different ways tonight,” Director Peter Laviolet said. “We're going to get a beat, or the coverage has collapsed, or the people will bounce back in another direction, or someone will fall, and the coverage will collapse, and it's a strange number in our zone. That's a different reason, and all our goals were in different scenarios.

“At the end of the day, that's not enough. We gave up a big, right opportunity in front of our net.

Columbus met at this moment, taking his first victory over the Rangers this season and sending the Senator to the first wildcard.

These two teams will meet again at the final hours of this regular season within a week of returning to the yard on March 15th.

Meanwhile, the Rangers would not have been able to make the opportunity they had at hand more fail.

Not only did they score a single point, they also overtook 11-4 with even strength in two games.

Sunday night was counted as the fourth time the Rangers gave up more than seven goals this season.

Adam Fanty's hat trick played an integral role in leading the blue jacket to victory, but the rangers were defensively wide open.

The Rangers didn't resist much as Zach Welensky danced their zone and danced to Justin Danforth within six minutes with the first goal of the game.

Artemi Panarin later got a stick on the Alexis Lafrenière shot, tied five game goalscoring streaks, tying the game 1-1 with 29 seconds remaining in that period.

The majority of the action unfolded in a second period of six goals, with the Rangers falling twice late, tied it down and then again two times by the end.

In 24 seconds, two goals from Fantilli exposed the blues shirt and how prone to defensive breakdowns.

After winning the rush in the aftermath of Will Borgen's stick breaking, Fantilli was left alone in front of the net as several rangers chased the puck below the goal line.

Beating 5-for-5, the Rangers pushed a shorthand.

Before Braden Schneider raised his wrist to one house from the right Faceff Circle, Columbus was unable to box for holding.

Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kryder rose to their blue lines and sent the puck backwards where no one was in front of them.

The two longest-equipped rangers passed back and forth through it, giving the home team two shorthand goals in 42 seconds before Kreider filled the 3-3 score.

It was the first time the Rangers scored their first short-handed goal since March 5, 2014, when they scored two short-handed goals.

Two quick goals brought Madison Square Garden back to life, but it quickly became quiet when play returned to 5-5.

“It was a great penalty kick and created a lot of energy and momentum in the building,” K'Andre Miller said. “I left it a little.”

Mathieu Olivier first redirected a Walensky feed that quickly passed Rangers goalkeeper Jonathan before Dante Fabro whipped one out of the high slot.

Two goals in the 1:44 span were the Rangers to chase 5-3 in the third season.

If the way that the second period ended didn't remove air from the garden, then Zach Jones's own goal in the middle of the third period certainly did so.

Jones accidentally led it straight away, trying to gloves a puck that bouncing in the air and giving the Blue Jacket a 6-3 lead.

This was when Fantilli completed a hat trick and capped the score with goals from all of the slots.

“You have to move on,” Rabiolet said. “We see it, we get better. We have to go back to work. We're still sitting here I think it's a point outside the wildcard. We have to win the hockey game. We're going on road trips, we have to win the game. It wasn't going our way, it's frustrating, we're disappointed that we didn't play better. We have to go back to work.”
