Rangers fall in overtime in high-scoring shootout loss to Utah

The Rangers were usually the pawns of chaos last season, but on Saturday night, it was the Utah Hockey Club that thrived in the chaos.

Clayton Keller scores with less than a minute left in overtime and the Blueshirts lose 6-5 to Utah in their home opener Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. The chance to hand the franchise's first loss to a new NHL club was short-lived. To ensure victory.

In Game 2, the Rangers had much less organization and composure than they had in Game 1, which can be attributed to the fluctuating and wild nature of Utah's play.

The Rangers, with a new defensive pair still finding their footing to start the season, trailed for much of the game.

It was an eventful homecoming at MSG, featuring a ton of open ice and resulting goals.

The lights came on a total of seven times in the second period alone, and Utah entered the second intermission with a 5-4 lead.

Despite Will Quill scoring a 5-5 tie with 7:04 left in regulation, the Rangers were unable to finish the job in overtime, dropping their first game of the 2024-25 season.

There was some kind of dysfunction brewing in Utah, epitomized by K'Andre Miller's trickle rebound into a wide-open net just before Quill tied the game.

Miller hung his head on the bench in disbelief.

The Rangers were able to answer for all but one Utah goal in the center slot, when Keller and Kevin Stenlund scored more than two-and-a-half minutes apart from each other, giving them a two-point lead.

Despite outscoring Utah 33-23 in regulation, the Rangers gave up a lot of points in prime areas. Utah took advantage of what they were given.

During a 4-on-4 play, after the Rangers' challenge on Victor Mancini's way-off goal failed and Utah goaltender Connor Ingram gave a holding penalty to Chris Kreider, Miller sent the puck to the Blueshirts. It tipped over behind the net.

Alex Kerfoot retrieved it and found Keller for a 3-2 lead.

The fourth line mixed things up with Utah late in the center frame when Sam Carrick and Adam Edstrom both dropped their gloves.

The two bruised forwards threw some serious haymakers, but Edstrom and Utah's Jack McBain were assessed for game misconduct after a fight in the secondary to break through. We decided to call it a night.

The Rangers then fended off Utah's 5-on-3 power play and allowed one point to Dylan Guenther when Utah had a 5-on-4 advantage.

However, Braden Schneider made an aggressive move to the net towards the end of the middle frame, keeping the Rangers within striking distance.

Utah carved up the Rangers in the neutral zone from the start, creating a lot of traffic in the middle of the offensive zone.

Less than four minutes into the game, the visitors took the lead when Keller found Barrett Hayton alone in front of the net for a 1-0 lead. It was the Blueshirts' first goal of the season.

For the first 20 minutes, head coach Peter Laviolette rode top horses Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere. Especially after both wings took advantage of the 2-on-2 rush.

Lafreniere dropped the puck for Russia's star winger, who converted it to tie the game at 1-1 and score his first goal of the season.
