Rangers Keep Winning Streak Alive
PAUL, Minn. — For a while this season, it seemed like the Rangers couldn’t catch a break.
However, their luck turned around after the Olympic hiatus.
Great teams tend to create their own opportunities, and that’s exactly what the Rangers demonstrated in their 4-2 victory over the Wild Saturday night.
Winning four games in a row for the first time this season reflects a significant transformation; they now play distinctly differently than they did during the initial months.
It’s like we’re all moving together as a cohesive unit.
They’re now better at covering crucial areas of the ice.
Their chemistry and dynamics have improved drastically since last month.
Once again, the Rangers started strong, jumping to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period.
An early penalty for Minnesota allowed the Rangers to get on the power play, and with captain JT Miller back in the lineup, head coach Mike Sullivan made the necessary tweaks.
Miller took Gabe Perreault’s spot on the top line, though Perreault still contributed from the second unit.
Perreault’s scoring streak reached a career-best four games after he helped secure a 1-0 lead, thanks to a couple of key plays from Noah Laba.
By the end of the first period, it was 2-0 in favor of the Rangers, with Vladislav Gavrikov heavily involved in the offense.
He managed to backhand a bouncing puck past Wild goaltender Filip Gustafsson, marking his 13th goal of the season.
However, Minnesota answered with a power-play goal that carried over from an earlier Rangers penalty, but they couldn’t build on that momentum.
Jaroslav Cemeral then scored his second career goal, taking a feed from Taylor Radish to extend the lead to 3-1.
Just seconds later, Gavrikov’s shot found Vincent Trocheck, giving the Rangers a comfortable lead.
Although Minnesota directed 21 shots at Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin during the second period and managed a total of 48 shots throughout the match, a crucial penalty assessed to Gavrikov late in the game awarded Minnesota a four-minute power play.
