Rangers lose to Mammoth in overtime and suffer an injury to Igor Shesterkin

The Rangers took to the ice Monday looking to leverage the excitement from their recent Winter Classic victory.

But things quickly turned sour midway through the first period against the Mammoths when Igor Shesterkin was ejected due to a left leg injury after a strange fall caused by Utah’s J.J. Peterka.

Shesterkin’s backup, Jonathan Quick, was unable to secure a win, as Sean Darge scored in overtime, leading to a disappointing 3-2 result for New York.

Shesterkin’s injury has raised significant concerns.

While Peterka seemed not to have made heavy contact with Shesterkin, he remained on the ice for quite some time, clearly in pain and being tended to by medical staff.

As chants of “Igor” filled the arena, Shesterkin slammed his pad against the ice multiple times before needing help to exit, facing a lower-body injury that required Quick to step in.

At 30, Shesterkin has been a key player this season, leading the NHL with 34 games played and showcasing a solid average of 2.47 goals against.

He’s been pivotal in preventing the Rangers from sliding further down the standings.

Going into Monday’s match, they were tied for 13th in the Eastern Conference.

Before the game, team owner James Dolan expressed his confidence in both the organization and the current roster, urging on WFAN, “Don’t give up on my team.”

Yet, should Shesterkin be sidelined for a prolonged period, that reassurance might be difficult to hold onto.

In terms of gameplay, things got tense early in the second period when Daniil Batt collided with Quick, prompting a scuffle that escalated quickly. Mika Zibanejad missed a breakaway opportunity, leading to a scoreless tie at the end of the first period.

The Rangers managed to score first during a power play at 8:29 in the second, as Alexis Lafreniere capitalized on a great pass from Zibanejad.

However, Utah’s Dylan Gunter responded by tying the game 1-1 at 12:39 after converting a rebound.

With a two-man advantage, the Rangers regained control at 16:36 of the second, when Vincent Trocheck redirected a shot from Artemi Panarin to make it 2-1.

But the Mammoths weren’t done; Michael Kirkone evened the score at 6:15 into the third period.

Earlier, head coach Mike Sullivan highlighted the importance of emotion and momentum in the league, emphasizing how a positive vibe can instill confidence within the team. Losing at home, alongside the sight of their star goalie limping off, certainly dims that mood.

Shesterkin joined a list of injured players, including JT Miller and Adam Edstrom, although they did just re-sign Adam Fox shortly after.
