Rangers’ Overtime Defeat to Sharks in Thrilling Contest
It was a showdown between two teams eager for a win, but the Rangers came up just short.
The now-victorious Sharks, who hadn’t won a game yet this season, stormed into Madison Square Garden on Thursday, pulling off a 6-5 overtime win against the Blueshirts. It’s been tough for the Rangers, as they’ve struggled to defend their home arena.
This loss marks the Rangers’ record at 0-4-1 at MSG, with Will Smith sealing the victory just 1:37 into overtime.
Both squads showcased impressive individual performances, featuring a player on each side who scored a hat trick.
Macklin Celebrini was instrumental for the Sharks, netting three of their first four goals, while Taylor Radish kicked things off for the Rangers before adding two more to help push the game into overtime.
This was Radish’s second career hat trick, a notable achievement.
For the Rangers, who aimed to establish home dominance, the start of the game didn’t bode well.
Just under two minutes in, the Sharks struck first. They were quick and managed to control gameplay throughout the opening period. Adam Gaudette was left unchecked, giving the Sharks a smooth 1-0 lead. Not long after, they took advantage of a power play to score their second.
The Rangers struggled to defend, allowing the Sharks early dominance. But after Radish reduced the lead, Celebrini managed to net another goal right before the first ended.
Will Quill struggled in the defensive zone, leading to another Sharks goal, putting them ahead by two.
However, the Rangers rallied in the second period, finding their footing offensively, which sparked three consecutive goals for the home team — highlighted by Mika Zibanejad’s power-play goal and Radish’s short-handed go-ahead shot.
Juuso Parsinen then equalized the score at 3-3 with an impressive maneuver against the Sharks’ goalie, Alex Nedeljkovic.
But Celebrini, proving his talent yet again, scored with a powerful one-timer to bring the game to a thrilling 4-4 tie. This performance made him the 15th teen in NHL history to register multiple hat tricks, according to Sportsnet.
