Rangers need an identity — and Chris Drury must get this hire right

This is a sad day for the Rangers organization. Performing a second coaching search within three years and a third coaching search in the last five offseasons represents acknowledgement of guilt from past or present hierarchies. A successful franchise is a model of stability.

The Ranger was once that. From the dawn of the hard cap era in 2005-2006 to the 2017-18 season, the club had three head coaches for 13 seasons. Tom Renny (3 Plus), John Tortorera (4 Plus), and Alan Vigrazi (5).

But the Ranger is not even in it now. The next guy is the fourth man behind the New York bench for six seasons. Following David Quinn, Gerald Gallant and Peter LaViolet, the latter was rejected Saturday by GM President Chris Drue after finishing the playoffs a year later after finishing the game-offs.

Drury’s authority and position within the organization was implicitly confirmed when he was allowed to make that decision before he held a press conference where he said, “It starts with me.”
