Rangers outgun, beat Flyers to clinch playoff berth

The 40-minute match was typical of the period.

The Blueshirts, who don’t have four regular skaters, rallied from a two-goal deficit with two goals from Alexis Lafreniere in the third period and Adam Fox scored in overtime to beat the Flyers 6-5 on Tuesday. The Rangers, who have been sitting atop the Metropolitan Division since Oct. 24, have been in the best postseason position all season.

The prospect of qualifying for the playoffs on March 26 didn’t seem like a big deal.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia had to fight hard to keep its playoff hopes alive.

The visiting team was desperate to secure two points. The Flyers needed two points to remain alone in third place in the Metro and stay above the playoff cutoff line.
