Rangers struggle in the final moments, losing to Sabres and concluding a solid homestand on a disappointing note

Rangers’ Homestand Ends with Disappointing Loss to Sabres

The Rangers recently managed to tighten their defense and develop team chemistry throughout a lengthy homestand, which wrapped up on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

However, when faced with a determined Buffalo squad, the Blueshirts fell back into old habits on their home ice.

They conceded three unanswered goals in the third period, including an empty-netter, leading to a 5-3 defeat against the playoff-bound Sabres.

In a tough stretch, the Rangers went over 18 minutes without a single shot on goal during the final 20 minutes of the game.

“I’m not sure if we were holding the lead and then just backed off too much, but we had some solid shifts at the start of the period without anything going on net, and they controlled the play up until midway through,” said captain JT Miller. “We rallied again at the end, but it wasn’t enough. I see a bigger picture here; we’ve been playing a lot of good hockey and want to finish strong this season. Spending time at home has been great, but I believe we can finish well as we head back on the road.”

The Rangers ended their season at Madison Square Garden with a home record of 14-20-7 but closed out the tumultuous year with a positive 5-2 finish.

Goal-scoring has become less about just surviving for the team. After a victory, the previously gloomy locker room felt a little brighter.

There’s a newfound competitive edge among the Rangers that seemed missing since the 2024 playoffs.

Alexis Lafreniere scored twice, including one goal by redirecting a shot from Adam Fox. This marked his 23rd goal of the season and a career-high 13th point on the power play.

Though in a losing effort, Lafreniere’s goal with 39 seconds left in the first period brought the score to 2-1 at the first intermission.

Taking on a net-front position has worked wonders for Lafreniere, who has accumulated 22 points since March 1, standing third among his teammates.

He found the net against Sabers’ goaltender Ukko-Pekka Lukonen early in the second period, leveling the game at 2-2 and marking his third multi-goal game of the season.

This gave the Rangers their first lead of the evening with their second power-play goal.

Fox nearly scored his own goal, adding to his streak of eight games with four goals and 11 assists. It makes one wonder what he might have achieved if he hadn’t missed 27 games due to injury.

“At the start of this season, we really struggled to secure wins,” said head coach Mike Sullivan. “In those first 20 games, we felt good about our process, especially at home, yet we couldn’t find the back of the net. Our players value playing in front of our supporters. It can weigh heavily sometimes as we try so hard to perform at home…”

“But in this second half, scoring has picked up for us. We’re putting goals on the board lately without changing our game plan. We’ve returned to a consistent team effort.”

Matthew Robertson has been chosen as the Rangers’ nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.”

Nominations are made by members of the Rangers Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, with the overall winner determined by a vote from the entire PHWA.
