Rangers’ Gold Medalist Returns to Mixed Reception
When the Olympic gold medalist from the Rangers returned to Madison Square Garden on Thursday, you could feel the excitement. But, well, not everyone shared that joy. Chris Drury, the Rangers’ general manager as well as Team USA’s assistant GM, didn’t receive the same warm welcome.
During a pregame ceremony that celebrated gold medal winners before the Rangers faced off against the Flyers—who eventually won 3-2 in overtime—Drury’s introduction was noticeably different. While players like JT Miller, Vincent Trocheck, Mike Sullivan, and David Quinn were met with cheers, Drury was greeted with boos. In fact, the public address announcer seemed eager to move on to the next name on the list—Quinn’s.
It’s possible that Rangers fans are feeling particularly dissatisfied with how the season has unfolded, especially as the team enters a phase of “recalibration” during a disappointing 2025-26 season.
In a letter to fans last month, Drury expressed his frustration, stating that he, too, had hoped for a more commendable performance on the ice. “No one within the organization, from management to coaches to players, is happy with what happened,” he wrote. While he acknowledged some successes over the past years, he emphasized that the ultimate aim remains to bring the Stanley Cup back to New York, which he believes fans truly deserve.
Despite the mounting frustration from Blueshirts fans, Drury still appears to have the support of owner James Dolan. Dolan even went on WFAN in January to express his confidence in Drury, remarking, “Chris Drury is a winner and a competitor. He won for himself. He can’t bear to lose. He’s probably not happy right now. I know he’s not happy right now. Neither is Mike.”
