Rapper Kodak Black Freed from Jail After Drug Possession Charge Dismissed

MIAMI (AP) — South Florida rapper Kodak Black was released Wednesday after a federal judge sentenced him to prison for violating his probation, but a drug trafficking case from 2022 remains pending. .

U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez in Miami handed down the sentence about two weeks after drug possession charges in neighboring Broward County were dismissed, according to court records.

Broward County Circuit Court Judge Barbara Duffy ruled earlier this month that prosecutors cannot dispute or deny the fact that the rapper, whose real name is Bill Capri, had a prescription for oxycodone filled at a pharmacy.

Plantation police arrested Capri in December after they found him drowsy at the wheel with white powder around his mouth, officials said. Authorities said the powder initially tested positive for cocaine, but laboratory tests later determined it was oxycodone, and Capri obtained a prescription in July 2022.

The arrest was a probation violation for an unrelated incident, which resulted in him being locked up in Miami for two months.

Capri was arrested in 2022 on charges of trafficking oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was released subject to regular drug testing as a condition of his release. Capri was ordered into a 30-day drug rehab facility early last year after missing a drug test in February and testing positive for fentanyl a few days later, according to court records. Then, last June, a warrant for his arrest was issued after authorities said he failed to show up for a drug test.

In January 2021, then-President Donald Trump commuted the rapper’s three-year prison sentence for forging documents used to purchase weapons. Capri had served about half of his sentence.

As Kodak Black, Capri has sold more than 30 million singles with smash hits like “Super Gremlin,” which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022.
