Macklemore Faces Backlash for Political Remarks at Concert

At a recent Ed Sheeran concert in New Jersey, rapper Macklemore found himself in hot water after making controversial statements regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This prompted some concertgoers to demand refunds for their tickets.

Real name Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, Macklemore took to the stage at MetLife Stadium and shouted phrases like “Free Palestine,” accusing Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza.

“I wanted to stand up here on stages across America and say two words that are near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine,” he said passionately to the audience, clad in a Palestinian Keffiyeh with imagery supporting Palestine displayed on the Jumbotron behind him.

Macklemore has frequently engaged in political discourse during performances, often expressing anti-American sentiments and promoting pro-Hamas rhetoric.

During the concert, he performed “Hindi’s Hall,” a track inspired by pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University, while images of Gaza played on the screen behind him.

Reactions to Macklemore’s performance were swift, with many criticizing both him and Ed Sheeran for allowing such political expressions at the concert. The Israeli-American Council even initiated a petition calling for Sheeran to remove Macklemore from his tour.

In their statement, the IAC emphasized that the concert was not intended to be a political platform. They questioned the appropriateness of using a global concert venue to promote a singular political agenda and expressed concern over the selective imagery and claims presented as fact without context.

The organization called for all concert venues to establish clearer boundaries regarding political statements during performances.

Additionally, the group StopAntisemitism highlighted past incidents involving Macklemore, including a performance where he donned a false nose, echoing an old antisemitic stereotype.
