Raptors' championship executive's long tenure suddenly concludes after NBA Draft

Toronto Raptors’ Leadership Change

The Toronto Raptors are entering a new chapter as they part ways with Masai Ujiri, who has been let go from his position as vice-chairman and president. The announcement came a day after the NBA draft concluded.

Ujiri dedicated 13 seasons to the franchise. In a statement, Keis Perry, CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, noted, “Throughout his time with the Raptors, Masai was instrumental in transforming the organization both on and off the court.” He emphasized Ujiri’s role in bringing the NBA Championship to Toronto and fostering a sense of belief in the community.

Though Ujiri’s time with the Raptors ended abruptly, other key figures, including general manager Bobby Webster, have been retained, and it’s been announced that Webster has received a contract extension.

Perry expressed confidence in Webster’s leadership, stating, “We believe the Raptors organization is in excellent hands with Bobby and his team.” He mentioned that they are looking ahead to next season while continuing to rebuild the team.

Reflecting on the timing of Ujiri’s departure, Perry mentioned, “Masai and I discussed this over a month ago. He inquired about any changes post-draft.” This decision seems to have been made to avoid disrupting the draft process, especially with a top pick involved.

As the Raptors begin their search for a new president, the front office will prepare for the upcoming NBA free agency period starting soon. Last season, the team struggled, winning only 30 games, and it has been three years since they made a playoff appearance.

Ujiri began his career in the NBA as a general manager with the Denver Nuggets in 2011 before taking on the same role with the Raptors in 2013, where he was recognized as League Executive of the Year. He was also pivotal in leading the Raptors to their 2019 NBA Championship.
