Los Angeles Chargers’ Offensive Line Faces Setback

The Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive line has suffered a significant blow, as team officials have announced that the injured player will miss the entire 2025 season.

During practice on Thursday, Rashawn Slater had to leave on a medical cart. It was a tough moment for him; he showed visible frustration when he later returned to the team’s facility, reportedly slamming his fist and throwing his helmet in frustration.

At just 26, he is set to undergo surgery for a torn tendon. It seems that Slater sustained this injury while being moved to the protected area during the drill.

While in the midst of blocking drills, Slater fell to the ground, grabbing his left foot in evident pain. Due to the severity, he couldn’t stand, prompting teammates and trainers to assist him as he was helped off the field.

Interestingly, just weeks before this incident, Slater had signed a record contract extension, locking him in with the Chargers for the foreseeable future. With this new deal, he became the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL based on average annual salary, valued at $113 million, with $92 million guaranteed.

“That’s something you really don’t want to see,” said fellow Chargers linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu. “It’s not just about Rashawn; we’re concerned about our teammate.” The team had made efforts to bolster their offensive line in recent seasons, drafting Joe Alt in the first round of 2024 and signing guard Meki Becton in March. Head coach Jim Harbaugh recently expressed confidence about the offensive line’s potential heading into the 2025 season.

As they adjust, Becton has been sidelined since late July with an unexplained injury. This may force Alt to shift to left tackle, allowing the Chargers’ offensive line to undergo significant changes in preparation for the upcoming season.

Last season, in no small part due to Slater’s presence, the Chargers only recorded eight turnovers, marking a franchise low. They were tied for the second fewest turnovers in a season in NFL history.
